What?

Post by supermike »

Anyone see this ad in Gmail in the margin (Google Adwords)? It puts a great big question mark in my head. I'm like wondering how this guy is able to afford the ad budget, and then how come his site never updates with new clients if he's sucking in that much traffic and able to get that much business, how come his site looks so primitive and doesn't sell himself very well, and so on. He also says some oddball stuff on his site, but oh well -- we all have to start new at freelancing somewhere and move from that point.

Does this make you wonder the same thing?

Yep - that's a big 'ol "What the Eff".
Real programmers don't comment their code. If it was hard to write, it should be hard to understand.

:dubious: Markup looks like FrontPage with the comments removed.

I suspect it's more likely that he's not being successful and is paying for adwords out of desperation.

You always need to tailor your marketing to your audience. Perhaps he deals with small websites. A 'crap' site like that is still going to get his name into the clients head, and it won't put people off like a glitzy site would if they're looking for something very low budget.

Yeah, we need to coin a term for homeless PHP freelance drifters who cling to Adwords for desperation instead of using Adwords for a well-done website, not quite able to understand why they get the traffic but very few sales leads. Here's another one I found today:

Heck, if these guys merely used the adwords traffic they purchased and, instead, steered to split-tested landing pages for PPC campaigns they could sign up for, they might actually make more money than they do for their consulting pages.
