Freelancers, How Many Hours You Putting In?

Post by volomike »

You know, I'm just picking up steam here. I'm getting better at what I do and can deliver stuff faster (if I can use my own framework and the client has spelled everything out nicely in the requirements, and if I don't have to do much of the XHTML/CSS work). However, I'm still working on the residual income thing that makes cash for me while I sleep. I calculated lately that I've been putting in 100 hour weeks for the past 3 months, and just as fast as the money comes in, my wife zips it away to pay down previous debts we incurred last year. You might think, hey, that's nuts, 100 hour weeks. But then realize I'm doing that in sweat shorts, T-shirt, sandals (was going to say bunny slippers, but no one has given them to me yet) and I now see more of my wife and kids this year than all the previous years that they've known me. But still, 100 hour weeks is starting to wear on me. My hours have turned out to be 10 or 10:30am until 2am, sometimes 5am. And I take a couple breaks inside that.

100+ hr weeks for me, but only 10-40hrs a month working on client stuff, the rest on projects that are going to make me passive income, frequently pulling all nighters where multiple liters of mountain dew get consumed
