I've been in web development for a short while and i am curious what you guys do for testing dev sites.

for instance:

i have development.com and I want to show a client what I have been working on and allow them to refresh and view progress at their liesure. whats happening is, i make a sub-dir /clientA and its getting crawled by robots and archived.

so if you search clientA one of the top results is development.com/clientA (not good).

I know the obvious way is to add nofollow, etc. to the meta tags, but surely theres an easier way with something in htaccess or a plain txt file to hide the whole directory so i don't have to add meta data to each file.
