phpBB Pros & Cons

I am not sure what to think of phpBB just yet. It does look nice and it seems to have some nice features, but I am not crazy about the idea of flat forums; I like nice threaded forums with nice threaded displays.

I recently installed phpBB at Video Game Links, but despite a steady flow of traffic to the site, it seems that nobody wants to discuss things there, so I have not yet had a chance to really get into phpBB. Can anyone who has used it a lot offer any pros and cons?

well Brain... i guessin paid forums such as vbulletin and ubb are kinda what keeps ppl around... not sure why... unless you have dedicated members things on free boards just don't see the same... but to me posting is posting... though i do like vbulletin... as for the whole layout... if there's something that you don't like than its all about customization :D

The reason for using phpBB was it was nice, and was already here. IBF looks nice, but is not ready, so wasn't an option. Phorum is nice, but too lite the last time I used it.

phpBB does what I wanted a Forum system to do, run forums easily, without hassle, and not get in the way of posting.

Not really sure what you mean by this. PHPbb is threaded. I take threaded to mean that each discussion is seperated by topic.

Are you talking about something like wwwthreads? That style? its kinda old-school, but it works nonetheless

Threaded By Topic vs. Threaded By Post

Yes, phpBB is threaded by topic... if you want to consider that threaded. It does not, however, associate follow-up posts with particular predecessors, but merely with the topics. Thus, it is not fully threaded and it displays each topic flatly, making discussions sometimes difficult to follow.
