My web server blew up!

Post by Vegan »

Well my web server bit the dust, hard drive failed.

So now I am back to -zilch. So new content will now all be PHP based. Should be amusing.

Anyway I need a disk for the IBM.

The last two sections make absolutely no sense to me.

Oddly I have had a home computer with a HDD for almost (if not more than) 20 years. In the last 6-8 years I have always had at least one computer running 24/7/365.

I have never experienced a HDD failure *knock on wood* -- thankfully too as I have never been prepared except for the last 2 weeks after purchasing a brand new computer and implementing multiple backups. :)

Your web server should have minimally had a RAID 1 setup.

Here is a video I made explaining my rig's hard drive setup.

Additionally external backups of any type are very important. I back things up to DVD/Dual-Layer-DVD as well as USB flash drives.

Losing your data is the third worst thing that can happen after loosing your access logs and the worst thing: loosing your domain name.
*Edit - fixed typo.

How would that happen?

Losing your data is much worse than losing your domain name or access logs - unless you happen to be one of the very few people to own a valuable domain name.

Ps. Please, please, please don't type loose when you mean lose.

I fixed the typo, my bad. :|

Consider the weight of a domain name in search engines...if you lose all the files you can immediately throw up some copies...but to lose the domain name and still have the files? You have to buy a new domain name and the value of those files goes back to zero in the search engines. Plus I type in a lot of domain names directly...not sure what I would do if devnetwork.net expired...except maybe freak out. 8O

Jab - A hard drive failing is not going to cause you to lose a domain name.

Whoa, dude please give me a little more credit then that! 8O

All I said was that a domain name has the greatest (potential) value, followed by server access logs, and then the website files/database.

Minimally I think any one who is serious should have their data in at least three different places...

1.) Live website (duh)

2.) localhost

3.) External backup

I think it's best to have at least two different external backups for various reasons. I occasionally burn copies of my work to DVD though back up my work almost daily to a USB flash drive.

Most hosting companies I'm certain have backups of their client's data though I am hardly the most experienced person around here in the ways of web hosting I presume.

I thought you were implying that you could lose your domain name if your webserver crashed. I just wanted to clarify.

Well I have resurrected the IBM, yet again. This time I have an 80GB disk, the DOA was 30GB so there is more room for stuff.

I am now using PHP for all pages as its not loading the Pentium III much at all. I expect that PHP is able tp serve lots of documents before the CPU is saturated.

One upside is more freedom in placing ads from various sources.

Right now I have a single default document soliciting assistance in replacing the IBM with a new machine. The sites are slowly being rebuilt and will be activated once they are working.

A nuisance but there is an upside to a fresh start, all new ideas can be implemented as there is no baggage.

Well found a Pentium IV, damn PSU shorted. So now on a Pentium II-300 until I scare up some components to finish a new machine with a modern motherbaord.

I upgraded my Windows box so I have a board with no CPU that needs an AM2 or better CPU to get up. That and some DDR2 would be nice to find.
