ScriptLance.com

Ok, I signed up for ScriptLance about a month ago, but in the past few days, I decided to really get into it and get a few jobs from them.

I find a small project that I could finish in 10 minutes, and get a quick $5 from it. I did so, and the guy paid me over ScriptLance. Little did I know that they charge 10% or $5, which ever is a greater amount.

Now, if that isn't stupid enough, I was charged $5 from them because I completed a program.

Let's lay what's what on the table.
  • You start with $1 on S.L.
    I "made" $5 from a project
    I was sent the $5 on S.L.
I go to check my account balance, and find out that I owe them $4
I email the webmaster and he/she tells me I broke the user policy
My IP is banned, so I cannot sign up
This makes me laugh. How poor of a company that they will make me, the programmer, pay $5 for completeing a project (note: the $5 that was paid to me was never received, I beleive) and ban me for doing so.

If you're thinking about getting into using ScriptLance, think twice before you join or you'll have the same 'problem' that I did.[/list]

Don't get me wrong, I feel your pain. However, You should have read all of the information before joining. I just found scriptlance.com yesterday and I have already read all of their information. It's always important, especially when dealing with real money and people that you don't know very well, to read everything and make sure that you know how everything works. Their information was publicly displayed in an easy to reach location, so all in all, this is your fault. They simply followed procedure.

Hmm, well they shouldn't allow "bounties" of less 5 bucks or less then...., but yes, always read the full ToS.

How exactly he broke the ToS and got banned is beyond me, though? Unless contacting the admin is cause for banning?

Yes, try to read everything before you sign up for something (especially when you have income involved)... But that really just seems like bad planning on the site's side to charge twice as much as he made. Even if he only got "paid" five bucks.

I would personally recommend using a combination of craigslist.org (free) and paypal (2.9% fee for payment to your account, free withdrawls). I just started a contract that I got through craigslist and, while the first couple of weeks had my nerves on edge a bit while waiting for payment, I feel comfortable with the situation now. I named my rate, negotiated some kick-ass things into the contract and have great communications with the client.

While I do understand that having a third party handle transfer of funds and the writing of the contract may add security to the transaction, I really think that unless it involves a year's salary in one payment, writing up your own contract and agreeing on the transfer of funds and code really has something going for it. I have gotten burned in the past from it, as I expect just about any contractor has, but when I do it myself I've really found that I get a better contract and a better (and longer) relationship with the client.

This i agree with. I feel that we haven't seen the full story. If we have, however, it is obviously bad business for a site to treat a potential client this way.

Bah, I normally read all ToS that I agree to (that deal with money), but I didn't do it to this one because I planned on using PayPal to send money. My client went ahead and sent money through their service, and I automatically accept the money when I click on "completed project".

I thought CraigsList was a group of links? I guess I didn't evaluate it good enough. ;) I'll check that out in a few minutes.

I saw scriptlance, actual of your signiture phice, and went looking at some of the contracts up for bid and saw $5 and $10 bids every where and thought how is any one going to make any money at this.
Then I did see the scriptlanec charge and thought wow are a lot of people going to be disappointed and burned.

I think I will try out craiglist and see how well it fares.
I must also agree that most contracts have been burned once or twice escpecially if you never get to meet the client face to face. $500 lesson well learned. I got even by sumbitting the email's they were using to some spam lists.

WHAT A STUPID SITE!!!

I started with $1 also. I refered someone who got a project so it went to $3.50 ($2.50 for the project....50% of the programmers earnings). Then a day or so later i check it and it's at -$1.50. It subtracted the $2.50 i earned twice from my account. I email their tech support and they tell me it's right. So now i owe them money for refering someone to their site.

LOL...how dumb.

haha, that's why I'm building my own ScriptLance-like community. ;) Now, I won't deal with the payment, allow them to select which service they want to use (PayPal, Yahoo Wallet, etc). Hopefully no fuss.

I just want to add the tech support personell who replied to my email from scriptlance made a mistake (some how) and misunderstood the situation and told me a false answer. I no longer owe them money for doing them a favor. ;)
