Hi. If you were to choose, which one of these would you buy?
http://www.amazon.com/SilverStripe-Comp ... 470681837/
http://www.amazon.com/Pro-Zend-Framewor ... 430218797/
Both are said to be informative and "quality". I'm interested in people's thoughts, approaches, and general CMS theory.

I see we have the same taste. I've been eying those books as well, although I tend to just wait until they're released.
I have built production sites with both Silverstripe and Zend, and they are completely different. You probably already know this, but Silverstripe is more of a turn-key CMS software, and Zend is a framework of building blocks that requires writing a fair bit of code.
As a side note, I'm a little annoyed with the Silverstripe admins. I submitted two widgets over a month ago, and haven't heard anything since. There was also a major typo in the installer code for 2.3.1, which tripped me up for a while, and nearly drove me to away to another CMS. It was critical, and simple to fix, but they consciously decided to ignore it and wait 3 months to fix it in 2.3.2. They're doing good with the open source philosophy, but they're not paying attention to their community. Apart from that, I love Silverstripe, and I find most of their template tags are a joy to use.
My only gripe with Zend is that development is moving too fast. Can that be a gripe? I bought "Practical Web 2.0 Applications with PHP" a few months ago, and much of the Zend Syntax is outdated. It required more Googling than should be necessary for a new book.
Overall, I tend to favor CMSs (WP & SS tied for my favorite) over frameworks, as most of my client's sites are small, and benefit from the fast development.
