PayPal Certified

Post by jack_indigo »

Do you think it would help me as a freelancer if I were PayPal certified and my website had a button on it that explained this? Would I see significantly more clients want to use me?

Certifications rarely mean much more than:

1. You spent a good deal of money to just take the exam
2. You have a basic understanding of the topic material

If you want people to take you more seriously:

1. Get a degree from a accredited university/college
2. Build an open source project and market the heck out of it

Some certifications can help you in specific situations - ie, the client is looking for expertise in a specific field, and the certification helps to convince him you have the qualification. I would imagine a client interested in building a site with a paypal payment option would be glad to see a paypal certification on his provider's resume.

Are you kidding me? :dubious: I'd love to see even one university that can produce students with even half respectable skills without any real life experience.

I'm not sure what to suggest as far as publicity directly. Naturally subjective to each person's POV though I personally think first you need the skills and secondly the ability to present your skills. An open source project is only one of many ways of doing that. You have your own site Jack...use it in comparison to other people's work and explain how yours stands out from the rest. Who is your audience? Are they technical, semi-technical, or non-technical? Use analogies to explain things to non-technical people. In example when I fix computers and come across a computer with only 256MB of RAM running XP or only 4GB of RAM for Windows Vista I explain that their computer is like a car without any wheels and a flat for a spare (And also to wipe Vista or 7 off).

Lol 4 gig of ram for vista... More like 10.

That's good advice. But in response to your original question...I personally would not pick one developer over another because of a paypal certificate.

I'd be more interested in a demonstration of your "skills" :)

Besides... any decent developer can pick up Paypal's API very easily. I would consider this more of a bonus rather than a qualification.
