PHP pays my bills and is paying for my studies as well.
Why shouldn't it? It's a very powerful and, to me, fascinating language. It's free which is an reason that even MS-dominated corporate UK starts to see as a huge benefit = more work :)

Well, you always have to use PHP with other languages, like SQL, HTML, etc. Well, you don't have to, but for the most part, you do.

PHP pays my salary as well as thousands extra a year in freelance work. It made me create the topic, the power of a book. Amazing how learning something can turn into a career so quickly

Not yet but almost.
I am starting to make some money at it a couple of bucks here and there but since I mostly progam for a start up there isn't much mony to be had yet but soon if every thing keeps falling into place.
I have made more doing free-lance work but not enough yet to live on although that is picking up as well.
I have been at it for 3 years and it has taken that long to be know as a php programmer and that php is a worth will language to use.
I live in a government, tourist town where it really isn't what you know but who you know and it has taken a little while to start and cultivate the right releationships.

My answer would be yes it is possible to make a living as a php programmer but it will depend on a few things.
1)who you know.
2)how goog you are.
3)and probably some luck.

Almost pays the bills. I have a stable job where I don't even get to use PHP (sob) and then I have my job that pays me real money that uses PHP as the base, but also involves MySQL, some scripting languages and of course mark-up languages. So I guess the stable job pays the bills and PHP feeds my media addictions (books, movies, games and music), which can amount to quite a bit more.

I've just started freelancing and I've already got a job that could pay 2 months rent+expenses and it only takes up a week of my time. So the answer to your question is yes, you can live off it.

BTW: By using the term 'live off PHP', it would also include by default using web design skills such as java/html/css/sql,etc..
