There's something a little bit fascist - and ridiculous - about trying to control language.

Yes, a shame and most strange. Most all languages tend to borrow from other languages and the terms come into common usage...
English alone has a untold number of terms adapted from umpteen different sources - tends to make the language richer! Even Spanish has some terms that came from Arabic- ojala!

Most English is derived from French. When the Normans invaded England Saxon and French were combined to make English.

Nope. English is a mixture of various Celtic languages, German, French, Latin and some Norse languages.

Yes, there was always a Celtic influence from the north (not very big). Anglo-Saxon was a Germanic language in the first place. French is mostly derived from Latin although the Saxons borrowed some Latin words. Of course there's a microscopic bit of Norse because of Viking conquests and, if I'm not correct, the Vikings integrated with the Scottish in some areas.

60% of our words are derived from Latin in one way or another, and most of that is from French.

So in short, English is a mixture of languages, like any language, but most of it comes from Anglo-Saxon, French and Latin.
