Curious about advantages in taking a php job over .net?

Post by basudz »

I'm a newer programmer with a degree and about a years worth of work experience behind me. I'm currently unemployed and am wondering what kind of advantages there might be in taking a php job over a .net job? I know the differences between the languages, just not aware of the real differences between jobs. (fyi i'd seek a junior level position in either language)

As you're a junior level developer it'll make very little difference - the money will be similar and the work will be similar just in different languages. If I were you I'd take whatever job you can in order to get the experience.

I do plan to take whichever presents itself but I figured since I have the time right now I would study up on language or the other.
Would there be any big differences a couple years down the line after working one or the other?

I'm not sure if this is correct but from my searching it seems like .net jobs salary cap much higher then php jobs, however it seems like there's a lot more php jobs available...Is that about right? And if so, why is that? Just because of open source or?

For the foreseeable future there will be high demand for both PHP and .NET developers (especially C#). Or, if you're truly more interested in experience check and see which job will require the broadest diversification of technology. The job may be .NET but it may also involve an enterprise-level database, SOAP or REST, XML, Crystal Reports, etc. etc. At this point in your career your biggest goal should probably be padding your resume, not necessarily your bank account.
