NAS - what do you think?

Post by papa »

Hi,

I'm thinking of either build a server for personal use or buy a complete package (NAS).

Do you have any experience with this or any tips?

NAS - http://www.webhallen.com/prod.php?id=105192 (Xtreamer eTrayz Nas, Demo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSaoNTSNn0g)
HDD - http://www.webhallen.com/prod.php?id=94206 (Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB)

I haven't started looking for parts if I build my own. But it would probably be Ubuntu or Window Server (I have MSDN license so pretty convenient).

I've had some bad luck with WD drives crashing. I've stuck with Seagate ever since. Just my 2c.

After reading some reviews I'll go for this if I'm not building my own:

http://www.komplett.se/k/ki.aspx?sku=433108 (Netgear ReadyNAS Duo RND2000)

http://www.komplett.se/k/ki.aspx?sku=376126 (1,5TB Seagate)

WD sucks. Seagate rocks.

A NAS is expensive. Storage is extremely cheap, but a NAS is good as an external hard drive system.
