Do you guys experience extreme forum lag?

Post by flying_circus »

It seems to be happening more frequently lately. It's quite frustrating to take about 20 minutes to draw up a long post only to have the server hang on submit. Perhaps its a sign I am only posting rubbish? When it does hang, the server seems to be unaccessible for 30 or more minutes at a time. This happened on 3 seperate occasions yesterday evening.

Since I cant review access logs, I cant be certain, but it seems to happen mostly when MANY bots are crawling the forum:

Code: Select all

Ask Jeeves [Bot], Exabot [Bot], flying_circus, Google [Bot], Google Feedfetcher, MSN [Bot], vin_akleh, wibblywobbly, Yahoo [Bot]
Is there a way to throttle bots, to retain the forum's useability? Of course, this is only speculation that bot traffic is the root of the problem.

I've never experience lag to that extent (which isn't to say it doesn't happen). I do experience lag periodically, but always < 1 minute.
Real programmers don't comment their code. If it was hard to write, it should be hard to understand.

I've been experiencing some lag (but not to that extent) lately, but it's my local DNS issue. Nothing to do with devnet.

Hmm, maybe I am just posting rubbish then.

I made my rounds through about 4 other message forums, craigslist, cnn, and checked my bank accounts while waiting for the post to go through. So who knows, maybe it is on my end?

I experience it almost every day. At times a post will take 1 minute or more to open or display preview, etc. I think yesterday I opened several posts in different tabs and it took 5-10 minutes to open them, but that's not the norm. At these times I can open any other site quickly.

I've experienced the same issues like AbraCadaver's ones.
