Ye' old general discussion board. Basically, for everything that isn't covered elsewhere. Come here to shoot the breeze, shoot your mouth off, or whatever suits your fancy. This forum is not for asking programming related questions.
One day you were surfing through the cyberspace with your old web browser and came across a site of interest, you ventured into the homepage and saw some pretty pictures and bits of text and a little tab on the side of the screen that read "read me" and when you clicked it opened up to read....
"Hello, it appears that you are using a web browser that is quite old. You really should update it ... blah blah blah"
Then when you clicked the close it disappeared.
If you are one of the people that has an old browser how would you take this little tab on the side of the screen?
If loads of sites had this little un-obnoxious tab on every page, do you think more people would update?
I would steer clear. I understand that some people do not have the permission level to upgrade their browser and are stuck with what their system admin gives them. According to Microsoft, IE6 on select platforms have not reached their EOL yet.
As a developer , backwards compatibility is more important to me. If backwards compatibility is not a design goal, then go ahead and do what you want.
I'm pretty sure that everyone who is capable of and wants to upgrade, already has.
This is true - a lot of companies, workplaces, etc. simply do not feel they have time to upgrade. It is more important to emphasise why they should update. If you see:
ThisSite does not support Internet Explorer 6. Please upgrade.
... people will probably forget it in about 10 seconds flat. However, if you say:
ThisSite does not support Internet Explorer 6, because it is full of security issues, holes and other bugs that put your computer, your data and your privacy at risk. Please upgrade.
... companies (who often have secure data) will take notice. Hopefully.
I have worked in a large organisation where information security was and is pivotal, but IE6 was the only browser available. Internet access was restricted to those who needed it however, and those who were granted access did not have free reign to visit any site that took their fancy, nor could non-admins alter browser settings - in short, solid security measures existed in spite of IE6.
So far as I am aware, there were no IT related leaks of information that were not simply a result of staff not following data protection rules.
ThisSite does not support Internet Explorer 6, because it is full of security issues, holes and other bugs that put your computer, your data and your privacy at risk. Please upgrade.
Is that a truthful reason, or is your true motivation to do with UI/aesthetics?
ThisSite does not support Internet Explorer 6, because it is not capable of rendering the pure awesomeness of this webpage, and because it is full of security issues, holes and other bugs that put your computer, your data and your privacy at risk. Please upgrade.
There is no real reason to stay with an outdated internet browser, especially with the choice available nowadays. By sticking with an old browser you face some of the following;
- Security Issues ( Usually because its no longer updated )
- Lack in innovation ( Because no one is working on it )
I am personally looking for a new browser, I use Firefox 3 and although its solid as a brick <span style='color:blue' title='I'm naughty, are you naughty?'>smurf</span> house, its bloated especially with addon's constantly thrown at you. I used Opera before and it was not for me, IE's I hate!!!!
