iPhone & G1 Apps kill battery life

I've got the G1, bought it a long time ago and it does everything I need. I bought a 16gb micro SD card and installed all sorts of apps. Over time, the battery life degraded to the point where it had to be charged 12 hours out of every day. I thought maybe the battery was going bad due to it's age, but on a hunch I uninstalled all the applications I wasn't using. The battery now lasts at least 4 times as long. Now I only need to charge the phone a few times a week.

So I guess this is a heads up, if you have all sorts of apps installed on your phone and have noticed a loss in standby/talk time, get rid of them.

It's interesting, in that if the apps aren't running, they shouldn't be using battery power. Maybe only certain apps run all the time, but it might be hard to find out which ones. This is unrelated to GPS, WiFi, BlueTooth etc. Even with all that turned off the issue was still apparent.

EDIT: I don't know for certain that this applies to the iPhone, it may manage apps differently, but a friend of mine was having the same issue and I believe he had luck uninstalling apps as well.
