PHP and Open Source Technologies

Post by devarishi »

Hi All,

So far I have got good knowledge and understanding of PHP. I am working on enhancing my knowledge of PHP and acquire advanced skills. I have been into Administration and Support Type of Profile at work so far. But now I want to go in for a PHP Developer's / Programmer's Profile as I think that I am more comfortable in scripting and developing logic.

But there are some problems which I am facing. I do get calls for interviews but they ask questions on Open Source Technologies such as WordPress, Zoomla, Drupal, CakePHP, etc. I am not familiar with anyone of them. I just know PHP at an intermediate level. These days I am also learning MySQL on my own. As I am already good at SQL and RDBMS related concepts because I gave papers of SQL Server and Oracle as part of my M.Sc. IT course, so I am not finding MySQL difficult. In fact, I am loving it! :D

Presently I am working for HCL but as I have stated above, I am more interested in development rather than in administration.

So, friends and Gurus out here, advise me as to how I can succeed in getting a job in PHP. Which one should I begin with: Drupal, Zoomla, or WordPress? Or should I join a training session on them?

Thanks!

it seems that some companies are taking these free products and expanding them in the hope to do less work. Finding jobs is hard these days. I just saw a job posting asking for a beginner programmer that knew, AJAX, PHP,Java, .Net, xml, Javascript, JQUERY and a bunch of other things. Who the FCK knows all these out of collage?
In any case, doing extension of these tools seem like a very boring job. Are you sure that's what you want? If it is, just try the products and see which one you like, ang go with that one.

Heh, an "entry level" job for a "beginner" who knows AJAX, PHP,Java, .Net, xml, Javascript, JQUERY, C, C++, PHP, +NET, BASIC, Fortran, COBOL, SQL, MySQL, Access, and maybe brain surgery.

That's what the job market is calling for these days.

But what they will have you actually doing is tinkering with some crapola site built on a WordPress platform because it's cheaper and can be maintained by somebody actually worth $7.50/hour, which is what they are actually paying.

Hopefully the job market will return to sanity someday.

Yachahuma and Bill H, you both are right. I get everyday so many emails announcing openings in UNIX, LINUX and PHP. But they (recruiters) are not happy with only 2 or 3 keywords. They add XML and its variants, Java and its other streams, C and its children, Scripting Languages, and also heterogenous platforms ranging from Windows Sever to AIX and Red Hat to Solaris, etc. And they don't forget "... would be a plus" or "... would be preffered" statements at the end of their job descriptions. No programming would be complete without a DB. They have MySQL, Oracle, and SQL Servers to name a few. Every company requires a different product knowledge.

Today I got an email for openings in PHP and inside they have mentioned knowledge of Java is also required.

This is stupidity!

It is true that nothing is impossible or that one can learn a lot of things. But what about specialization?
