Start from scratch or fix the existing code?

Post by Davidson »

I'm in need of advice. I've purchased a pre-made/ off the shelf php script. I have the idea for the site I want: The question is; Should I build and develop this pre-made script, or should I start from scratch?, taking everything into consideration, and considering a limited budget. Either way I would need to hire someone to do the work.

Hope for some insight, thanks!

That depends on a number of factors you have not outlined.

1. How much of what you need to do does this script accomplish?
2. Is the script you purchased a high quality script that is easily extensible?
3. Will modifying the script open you up to license issues that you don't want to be encumbered by?
4. What is the cost of modifying vs. starting from scratch? Keep in mind what you've already paid for the script.
