help getting xp (BSOD) or vista (missing driver) running

Post by s.dot »

I am trying to install my windows xp or windows vista OS on my sisters new netbook so she can use it for work. It came with windows 7, but her work applications are not configured to work with windows 7 but do work with xp and vista.

I have the netbook, xp and vista OS discs with key, flash drive, and an external usb dvd rom

here come the problems..

With XP (preferred OS to install):

I get the Blue Screen Of Death when installing from external dvd rom OR usb bootable flash drive with the following message (and yes, I've googled)

[text]A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps.

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive
to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.
Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then
restart your computer.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7A8A524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)[/text]

With Vista (not preferred, but almost working)

The only problem I have with this installation is drivers for the ethernet adapter/controller, which I've searched all over for and cannot find (can't let windows update do it because I can't access the internet because of the missing driver).

In Device Manager, under Network Adapters "Atheros AR8152 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller" is configured fine, but under Other Devices, there's a yellow triangle next to Network Controller and the device status says "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

What do I need to know to get this driver?

Under system information > network > adapter, the name is [00000000] WAN Miniport (L2TP), if that helps

If I could solve either of the above problems that would be great!

I don't suppose a netbook would have a modem, would it?

Thank you guys for the replies. She wouldn't let me continue trying to fix it. She returned it and got one with XP installed (after i re-did the factory settings, of course).

It hurt my nerd feelings.
