Get back to reality!

I really spend too much time with my disgusting computer.
It's kinda sweet'n sour.
* Programming gives me a feeling of *new*, and I love it
* It makes the lawn grow too high
* It crasches any love from those living around me
* It makes wise investments never happen
* It doesn't cost anything, It doesn't give anything of REAL VALUE back
* It makes it a project to go for a walk
* It makes me fat
* It makes my back hurt
* I can't get enough of it
* I do it at work, I do it as a hobby, and I do it for daddy
* It prevents me from developing as a person
* It steals time from what I really want to do, create music
I love it but I can't stand the consequences. Yet, I do it all the time.

Yes, I know it and I hate it.
My daughter was born yesterday morning, I spend the day, the night and today in the hospital to spend as much time as possible with her (and her mother of course!)
Now I'm at home ( @12:27am ) coding as much as I can in order to get the thing I promissed to a customer done, and to get back to the hospital at the latest at 8am.... and posting this stupid remark I SHOULD BE CODING DAMN!!!
I'm a father now and hope I can get to less than 60 hours coding a week!
It's not me but the wife

First of all congrats greenhorn666
I probably spend to much time coding(or at least on a computer) but it never seems like enough time when projects start to stacking up.
It isn't me that that hates it but the wife who thinks I spend to much time coding and not enough with her.
Of course if I spent more time with her

then I could be in the same state as greenhorn666

Funny
greenhorn666 & phpScott
I was actually thinking about you two guys when I started this. (Still, I wrote it from my own point of view of course. I am not preaching here...)
I remember phpScott having an underline saying:
"My wife just loves the back of my head"
And you greenhorn666 , who is a daddylidaddy now... Congrats!
But I must say I was surprised when I read
this and understood you were at this forum. A new life really is a big thing.
Computers are dead, and they'll kill me too

Choice: "What? Computers are the meaning of life, are they not?"
..is not extreme enough for me.. rather I would put..
"Computers are the meaning of life and anyone who disagrees shall be dragged into the street and shot."

With some creativity you can easily break the addiction
- use compiler-languages. Include everything in your buildtree, esp. standard libraries that your project depends on. Always use make clean && make all. Very easy with Visual Studio .NET. Enjoy your afternoon off
- windows: schedule auto-defrag of all partitions at once for lunch time every day
unix: schedule updatedb and any replication you can think of for lunch time every day - Tell all your friends about your dsl-flatrate and that virtually every movie/song is available for free
- and so on...

It affects animals also...
If I make a (apparently) playful noise, one of my two cats instantly seeks me out, running for the room where the computers at.
If I havn't parked my arse in my usual spot, he stops, looks around, and starts 'whining', oh thy mighty, until I show myself... He's so used to see me there, like any furniture.
Tried this a couple of times to prove it to some friends. That's why I voted on the 2nd option, underlining "hate it".

com-pew-ter? What is a com-pew-ter?
I alternate between worshipping at the feet of the might box of knowledge and cursing it for ruining my life (or lack thereof).
When I have work to do, I am attached to my computer so intimately that I might as well marry the bloody thing. When I am between projects (or working on one that does not interest me) I have a great urge to drop kick the thing off the mountain, shoot it with a high caliber rifle, and then toss it into a merry blaze and watch it melt.

What? Computers are the meaning of life, are they not?
I wouldn't say computers though. More like "internet". I can spend all day surfing PHPDN

, or scripting. My local server's crap so I rarely test my scripts on it, and I need a constant FTP connection to my server. So yeah, I need internet rather than computer. But then I can't really use internet without a computer O_o.
If my DSL was somehow down. I sleep all day

I am presently testing FreeBSD on my playground server.
I guess this moves me from:
* Yes, but I rest during weekends so that life can catch up.
to:
* Yes, I know it and I hate it.

I really don't think the 'nerd' factor comes into it these days.... most jobs now require some sort of computer skills, and the number of creative 'outlets' using a computer is mind blowing.
For me creating websites and other stuff using Flash, PHP etc is just another vent for my creative side..... it's not all zeros and ones you know
