Beginning technical consulting

Post by nigma »

Hey, in the future I would like to do computer and programming consulting. My definition of "technical consulting" is talking with someone about possible solutions to a problem they are having (from a printer not working to a setting up a wireless lan).

I am wondering if any of you can clue me into what someone starting out doing PAID technical consulting usually charges per hour?

Also I am wondering if any of you can tell me what kind of jobs I should start out with that will provide a great deal of experience that will come in handy when doing technical consulting.

Thanks for any advice provided.

I would suggest talking to family members, and have them put out feelers for you. You need to build up references that you can provide to people.
Also, I suggest going to a bookstore and getting a book on starting a consulting biz. There are ALOT of tax advantages you need to look at.

Read a lot of articles/books/magazines/tutorials on every type of technology subject you will want to work with on a regular basis.

Also in that business return customers are very important so you want to give the customers you have had and will have the best possible experience working with you.
