To be local or not to be
Generally speaking, do you see an advantage in using a local hosting business - if you and your customers are located in Ireland for example, do you think there is a perceivable difference in load times where the server is A) also located in Ireland B) located in the USA due to cheaper prices?

Re: To be local or not to be
I am located in a city that geographically is immune to earth quakes, fires or any serious natural disaster. We are in a prairie flood plain but are famous for a massive dyke built around the perimeter of the city that prevents flooding. Situated in the middle of the Canadian prairies we are also a trucking hub, and soon to be aviation as well as many established call centers (despite outsourcing to India, etc).
Basically are the perfect location for a server farm, hosting, etc, but lack of business vision or whatever preason means most hosting companies in this city are a joke. Servers at best, running in someone's basement or office. No thanks. Not to mention way over priced for what you get. I always find hosting in other cities. Tera-Byte in Calgary??? is my shared host of choice. Rackspace is it's a high performance/critical web application or serverbeach if dedicated hosting at affordable cost is required.
So to answer you question, I see zero benefit in local hosting. Support can suck just as bad (and likely will be worse) than had you gone with a company that is recognized for being a reliable hosting company.
Cheers,
Alex

Obviously, the farther away the hosting is from the user, the slower it will be. Ireland to London is not that big of a deal, but Ireland to California may be. If you can find affordable, dependable hosting close to your customers then that is best. I sell hosting where you can choose from four data centers: US, UK, Sweden, Australia.

Hmm. Good answers, something to chew on a bit. Currently in Beautiful BC so I suppose anything North American would suit ... will go and do some more thoughtful chewing.
