@pocker: there is no set price for building a website. Asking that is the same as "how much does designing and developing a building cost?" What would you answer to that? 10k? 100k? 10 million? A billion?

It all depends on too many factors.

And even if you would give a very specific example of a certain website you mean, the answer is impossible to give. A freelancer from a developing country might charge $200 for building a static 10 page website. Someone else in Dubai could charge $20000 if he build the exact same website for a rich sheik-with-a-long-name.

@pocker: The cost of developing a web site is directly correlated to the time you spend building it. The reason for this is that time is the only REAL resource that is being expended in the sites creation. Sure you have to factor in hosting costs and such, but that's really not part of the cost of building a site.

That's basically true of course, but there are other factors that can add to the cost such as necessity for third-party components (and associated license fees). That won't always apply - if for instance you can develop the site in its entirety using FOSS and need no further guarantees - but in many cases it will.

@greyhoundcode Right you are my friend. Like you said, in many cases you can develop a site using FOSS, but often there will be a need for third-party components. Those should all be figured into the cost of a site when specing out the project.

Exactly as they have stated. Though there are still freelance developers out there that "sell features," most freelance developers find it better to "sell time." My free time is very valuable to me and I charge accordingly. Otherwise, it's not worth my time.

It's also not related to how slow you can work, if someone requires some development / design work done, they (normally) have the completion of the site tied to some sort of time frame. And if someone is no good at building houses would you hire them to build you one? Skill is a relevant factor, maybe not as important as price at first glance but if someone skillfull can build a good website (good in terms of design, useability, etc) it might be worth spending (a lot) of money.
