I am wondering if any of you guys have paid a company to come up with a layout for your site? If so were you pleased with the layout produced?
How much did they charge?

Hey, you use MSN to come online for like 2 seconds LOL.
Anyhow, I've never used a company since I AM a designer myself. But most of the time the charges I give depend on what the client want. First, I ask them what they want; then their budget. Then I can work out a plan for them - dude, don't expect top quality flash at $100 lol.
Well, most companies/individuals charge as much as possible - but as said, "You get what you pay for". They do come up with amazing effects and all. If you want a design, do some research behind that company, ask the WHT experts, maybe. Better yet, take a look at their porfolio.

i am the lead design/developer for a design and advertising agency.
I have never had any client say to me they don't like the layout of the designs i produce.
There are a lot of companies out there that just use bog standard templates for their layouts, and you can easily tell.
We take each new site and give it an individual layout/design, so nearly every site we produce is different.
But, for this kind of service, you obviously pay more than a company that produces layouts they base on a template.

Rates can vary substantially depending on who you're hiring, for what, and when. I personally charge from $30-70 hourly, depending on the task and other factors.
People tend to ask a lot "how much does it cost for a website?" and I have to look at them in disbelief. "How much does it cost for a car?"
It varies.
Best bet, come up with a detailed list of what your design specs are and send out a Request for Proposal to some agencies. They'll get back to you with estimates and probably some pitch images as well. If they don't get back to, you know right away to go to someone else.

Well phice, if you knew me in person you would know that I am not very artistic, and as you have probably found people who don't think artistically don't come up with great designs.
The only designs I can say are mine are the ones at

The only one that isn't mine is #3, which you might have seen on BlueRobot.

I'm not artistic at all (trust me), but I'm working on this design that I really like:

That's pretty sweet. I didn't examine the CSS / HTML but I suspect you are making a hidden div box in css and then using JavaScript to make it visible? For the Members box ?
I did that in the past but when I sucked with CSS and the results were horrible when I changed not only monitor resolutions but browsers (i.e. the div box would show up in a completely diff spot)
Let me know how it turns out?
