Big thanks to the board and its members

Post by Linkjames »

As you may or may not be aware, I have been trying to create a site in PHP/MySql for the last few weeks. If it were not for the help of some of the people on these boards, the site would never have happened. Anyway, I am going to link to the forums in the credits (obviously), but with thier permission, I would like to mention a few people aswell. I would like to thank the following (In no particular order, except JAM as he replyed to just about every post I made)
  • JAM - By far and away the most helpful guy who replyed to my posts. You have my undying gratitude
  • Nay
  • wmasterj
  • twigletmac
  • McGruff
  • phplancer.com
  • Cruzado_Mainfrm
  • Unipus
  • volka
  • Bech100 - For his comedy help here. Ok, he was helpful aswell :)
  • m3rajk
I will be putting people listed above in my credits page if they allow me. It will be just their username on the boards, unless they wish me to put additional detail on such as email or urls, which I am more than happy to do. Basically, if your name is up there, I will list any details you want in my credits, by your name. Just post them below. If you only want me to post your username, post so below. Anyone who does not post, I will assume wants to be left anonamous, which I will respect.

Once again, thanks to all who helped me with this project.

You don't always hear how someone managed to resolve a problem so it's good to know you've got everything up and running. Got a link to your site?

I got a lot of help here myself when I was starting out - which wasn't that long ago so I still remember how frustrating it is when you get stuck on something.

It's very considerate of you to offer a credit. You obviously haven't got my bill yet.

I can't remember how far you've got with php, but a next step might be to take a look at phppatterns.com. Lots of good articles about OOP design & patterns.

The site is occasionally avalible at http://linksairsoft.servebeer.com/answer/ although it is still a work in progress. The server is for testing purposes, but its avaliable online when its up. It runs of my home PC, basically whenever I'm playing with it. Once its finished and I can afford, it will be going onto a web host (Month or two).

Shall I put you down for a credit on the site then?

Hugs, coffee and small kittens actually. But only if it helps.

Seriously I'm glad to be of service. The only thing I want is that you will be able to answer my questions in less than one year from now...

Good to see this. I have seen plenty of forums where people just post things like "plz give me the code to create my site" and expect it to be all handed to them on a silver platter. Most of what I have seen here is people eager to learn, and share that knowledge once they have learned and gained experience. There is still hope for the Human Race after all! :-)

Yup, seen those too. Whats the fun about that?
We still fight with the "No, I cannot read the stickies"-issue though. Thats rather annoying also. Not that it applies to any of the posters in this thread, but...

Most people should try to at least read the (first) one Mac has in her sig...

one thing i hate is when someone wants me to teach him/her how to do a website, they can barely read an e-mail and they want to know 'that' much???, they better start knowing what www truly is and then tcp/ip so they can get a preview of where is the server standing, but what is a server they ask... it's like playing guitar without knowing what the circle hole is for, you can play it but when the times get tough... if u know what i mean

Yeah, I've been there, and If I tell them go learn this and that first then they tell me that I suck, well, kinda - since I wouldn't spoon feed them.

Man, wish they were in our shoes for sometime.

Good to see appreciative members. A wide range of knowledge and experiece here - what one person knows, the next one might not, and vice-versa. I am having to learn ASP.NET for work - will be asking many, many questions at asp places, but also doing my "homework" - books lying about everywhere - all new knowledge comes at some price - I prefer to regard it as investment of time and energy.

I've done ASP before. Don't really know the difference between .NET - either ways, I prefer PHP. I just don't like the look of ASP you know. It's more like talking rather than scripty. I don't see much of { and } or whatever around. heh
