Using separate monitor - How to change audio

Hello.
I now have a separate TV/Monitor I connect my laptop with via HDMI.
My laptop runs on Windows 7.
When I plug the HDMI in with monitor connected I then change the 'Display' setting to Laptop AND "Projector".
The problem is, all audio then passes through that separate monitor.
This causes a problem: when I am on Skype, I want to have the sound from the laptop going through the laptop, and sound from the monitor going through the monitor.
Is there a setting that when you have the 'extended screen', which is basically what it is, that the extended screen's audio only goes from that screen, and what is viewed on the laptop only comes from the laptop?
A prime example is having a BBC iPlayer programme on: I could turn down the TV's audio, while keeping the audio up on my laptop for Skype calls. The way it works now.... I can't.
Any help would be appreciated.
Simon

In control panel, under hardware & sound (or something along those lines), you can select your output source in the mixer.
I am currently running linux, so I cant do a walk through, but if you can find the sound settings, you should be able to find where to toggle the output device settings in the mixer.

To output the sound to BOTH options?
So laptop AND monitor? or just one or other?

Sorry, it looks like I misunderstood. The advice I gave above would pipe all sound out of one device or the other.
I'm not sure how to accomplish what you are trying to do.

Try going to Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound ->
You should see both your computer and the attached HDMI monitor. Right click on the one you want your sound from and select "set as default".
See if that helps.

I was rather hoping the HDMI and my Laptop would know how to put the sound that's going down the HDMI, into the HDMI-connected device, and the sound from the laptop, thru the laptop device.

by "sound going down the hdmi" do you mean this:
If you have an app running on your laptop's screen then the sound should be on the laptop but if you move that application to the external display you want the sound to move to that screen?
I don't think that is possible yet from windows.

Basically yes.
So.... if I have a video clip running on the external display and then someone rings me on skype, I want to be able to mute that external display, but take the call on the laptop.

with win 7 you should be able to designate device as a 'default communication device' - skype respects that choice as far as i know.

So does that mean if I am on Skype, it will be voiced out of my laptop speakers, while something over on the extra monitor will only be voiced out of that monitor??

if you set hdmi as your default output device and your laptop speakers as your default communication device skype will use speakers while everything else will go to your tv. also you can select device to use from the skype settings (including microphone to use, speakers to ring incoming call on and output to use during the call).

What happens if I then unplug the hdmi from my laptop? what I think will happen is what happened the first time I tried it - NO audio comes from my laptop, as it is looking for the external display.
So I would always have to switch it back and forth.
Just would be so much simpler, if Windows 7 knew there was a HDMI, so channelled what I was dragging thru the HDMI cable.... and play it on that connect device, while audio on the laptop screen, played thru the laptop's default audio.
I don't know why they wouldn't think to enable that??

That would be problematic, as the source of the sound is an application, and application may have multiple windows (or no windows at all) open.

As in "minimised" perhaps. Yes I can understand that. It's just difficult the way it is.

Hi
I now have a new HDMI cable connecting my laptop to a larger TV.
I want to pass all Audio and Video through to the TV, so the laptop is just running the program. Problem is, the program is a game and it runs at full screen, so I can't "restore" and drag it over.
So I set it to go to Projector Only, but then the audio still comes out of my laptop.
I don't see on this screen how to set the audio to go from the Panasonic TV.
Also, when I set Windows 7 to identify the TV it sees it as 1900p.... but then the image on the screen is smaller. Tho that may be down to the video settings in the game.
How do I make the audio go thru the TV?
