My philosophy on the subject;
I belive that OO wasn't very well known amongst the general public, many heard the name but not so many had a whole lot of clue about him nor Black Sabbath (incl myself).. MTV's show has made him much more popular and known as a person to the general public, and likely many is buying his music because of that. A lot of people think him and his family is odd/funny-from-the-outside,etc etc, to make it short, "Cool"..
But, I believe that many of thos who where/are hardcore Black Sabbath and Ozzy fans from before the MTV show no longer see's him as the "holy devil" of hard rock, he's more of an aging excentric that swears a lot, to them he is "lower" than before, to the general public the family and him makes a good and real comedy with some serious issues inbetween (such as Sharons fight with cancer, which makes the general public even more interrested)..

So to me it is really the innovation of celebrity-reality tv and MTV's lucky-or-good pick of celebrity that made him what he is today.. a couple of years ago he was "just" as very good and worshipped musician..

Heh, I think there is a generation gap here. In my day Ozzy was bigger than MTV. Whether you liked or hated him, he was big news. Much of that is faded glory now, but what MTV did imo was take one of the biggest 'heavy metal' icons and show he is human - burned out, old, and mentally deprecated due to drugs, but human.

just my 2 halfpence.
