Click the star in the Awesome Bar, add tags.
califdon wrote:I like to use the latest update of any browser I use, for several reasons: first, they often correct security exploits, and second, I often want to check whether the latest update might break one of my web pages. Whenever FF updates, it nearly always says that xxxx Add-On will not work with the update (it says this AFTER I have committed to install it!) and offers to search for compatible versions of the Add-On, but in the case of Firebug, it never finds a compatible version. For example, I have been using FF 12 for weeks or months now, but I just tried to restore Firebug, and the download site immediately informed me that Firebug is incompatible with FF 12. As far as I know, there is no mechanism for notifying me when Firebug releases a compatible version, and I don't want to spend time every few days checking to see if it's available yet. I'm a little disappointed that Mozilla hasn't addressed this issue, one way or another.
Could you be using a beta or release candidate? As far as I know, the latest version of Firefox is 11.0. That's the version I'm using, at any rate, and the About window tells me it's up to date. Firebug is working just fine and I couldn't tell you the last time I manually updated Firebug.

@Celauran: With the tagging feature, is there any reason at all for using bookmark folders, then? Maybe so you won't have to remember all your tags, I guess. I don't suppose you can easily bring up a list of tags??

Do you mean something like smart folders?

Double WOW!! WOW!! I was right, we weren't talking about the same Firefox!! Call me stupid (aww, well, please don't!), but I didn't realize that I'm somehow "on the beta update channel" and as I review my past updates, they have always been to a beta release, and I didn't even know it! I have no idea how I got into that cycle, but it explains why I've been having so many of these problems. I just looked up what I have to do to get "off" the beta update channel: I have to uninstall FF and download a fresh copy of the stable version. Allegedly this will get me in step with everybody else.

And, as if to confirm my stupidity, I had never heard of "smart folders", so I will look into that, too.

Thanks!

[UPDATE: I completed the uninstall and reinstall (saving all my user settings) and now I'm running the stable release 11 of FF. I got my Firebug and other Add-Ons back and life is normal again. Whew!]

Jeez, califdon, that all sounds like something I might do. I feel so much better.

Maybe it's because we're both old salts, do you think?

Okay all you Chrome users, maybe you can answer me a question. I have been typing my search criteria into the url bar and it has been going to google and doing the search. No problem.

Now all of a sudden it is going to "https://www.google.com/blahblahblah" and is blocking me due to an invalid certificate, and is telling me that "You cannot proceed because the website operator has requested heightened security for this domain." I did not change any settings or anything, and it does this no matter what search term I use, or even if I just type "www.google.com" in the bar.

I even tried forcing a nonsecure site by entering "http://www.google.com" and it went to "https://www.google.com" and blocked me.

So, at the moment, using Chrome, I cannot do a search. Any help?

Update: Actually, I'm having this same issue at several sites. I'm getting it when trying to access a database server which I was able to access with no problems just an hour or so ago. I have no reason to believe there is a problem with their certificate, and I was receiving no notices before.

I'm also being blocked from my email server. I was getting a notice earlier, but was being allowed to proceed by clicking a button. There was a "proceed" button and a "return to safety" button, now there is only a "back" button.

It appears that at this point I am actually being blocked form any secure servers, period.

If google has any help for Chrome users, I have not been able to find it, so if you know of one maybe you can point me there.

Clearly something is amiss there. I would reboot the computer to see if something just went haywire in RAM. If it still behaves this way, I'd try a different browser to make sure that it's not something computer-wide, which would suggest a virus. Otherwise, I'm baffled.

Well, just to keep me thoroughly confused, it is no longer doing it. Everything is fine. Effing computers, Effing Internet...

And now it is doing again. Damn thing comes and goes. Sometimes I can access these sites, other times it blocks me with no recourse.

Is there any place that Chrome users can go for assistance? Something like the Firefox user's forum?

@Bill H http://groups.google.com/a/googleproduc ... rum/chrome
Not sure if you have visited this site before but it looks like a forum for Chrome related issues

Thanks, social, that's precisely what I was looking for. I read through several threads and it doesn't look like anyone from Google participates there, but there does seem to be a lot of activity. I'll give it a shot.

I did see one thread regarding blocking access due to certificates, and there must have been thirty complaints having to do with the "proceed" button not working. In my case there is no "proceed" button, but it seems Chrome is having a problem handling certificates and I am by no means alone.

Well, light is appearing at the end of the tunnel, but it is beginning to look more and more like an oncoming train.

Turns out this is a very common problem for users of Windows 7 who upgraded to the latest version of Chrome (18.0.1025.151). There are Google people at that forum that social_experiment cited (I spoke too sone when I said there were not), and they are asking for screen shots and such, so maybe they will get this dealt with, but there are a flood of angry massages in that thread and no few that were deleted as "abusive." Given some of the language that is allowed, I can only imagine what was said that needed to be deleted. Yikes, and I was in the Navy. People are not happy.

There is a work around (isn't there always?) which is to go to C:\Users\"User"\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data and delete the file chrome_shutdown_ms.txt. That does solve the problem, but my guess is that at some point it is going to recreate itself. Whatever...

How weird. I only have Win 7 on my laptop and, although I have Chrome installed on it, I usually use FF on it, which isn't often, anyway. Nearly all my online time is on my desktop, which is XP. I do hope Google fixes this, though.
