That's like saying a hammer is the best tool; absurd

Not really, especially if it's a claw hammer. Two uses are obvious:
  • It can be used to hammer nails into another object
  • It can be used to extract nails from an object
That is far from all a claw hammer can do, however:
  • It can be used to insert screws as well as nails, either by pounding or by using one of the "claws" as a make shift flathead screwdriver
  • It can be used to keep doors open
  • Assuming the claw/hammerhead are of one piece of metal it can conduct electricity
  • Hitherto hard-to-reopen paint cans can be pried open with ease
  • ... much more besides
In my humble opinion the hammer is indeed the best tool by shear dint of its versatility.

A screwdriver is good for many of the same reasons, plus it's smaller and doesn't require as much free space to use. And the better models can have little LEDs so they function as flashlights, have magnets in retractable poles so you can pick up screws or nails, and have swappable bits to fit different types of screws. And to top it all off they taste better.

So screwdrivers > hammers :)
