General SEO homepage query

We are looking to see why a certain website we look after is not ranking well for the homepage, but the internal pages rank very well locally.
At the top of a homepage there are three big sliders. Is it good SEO to have these sliders named correctly and linked internally, or, should these only be about the keywords for which the homepage is ranked, plus maybe 'support'. Leaving the internals pages to rank themselves, and try to keep their keywords away from home?
So if a Homepage is about Plumbing and Heating, but you have sliders named "boiler-service" and "tap replacements", is that ok? Or shoudl they be on their own pages, and just having images like "plumbing-taps", "gas-heating" on the homepage?
Cheers.
