Anyone used any good cc gateways?

Post by nielsene »

Hey, I've been away from here for a while, work and projects have been eating all my time. But it looks like one of the volunteer projects is about to spin up into a small business, nothing fancy -- only slightly better than self-sustaining I think, but hey it'll be cool to grow it to the next step.

I have a good handle on most of my hosting needs and options and other "technical" costs. I understand most of what I need for banking services from an account standpoint. However I'm having trouble getting a good handle on good/reasonable rates for credit card processing services. If anyone has any advice, I'ld love to hear it. (Mod if this is a hosting question, please move it, but I didn't think it quite fit....)

Specifically I'm looking for a place that allows me to code my backend code to submit cc requests to their service for authorization/ verification/ etc and handles the transfer of funds from the customer's CC to my account. Typically speaking I'ld rather a higher yearly or setup fee, in exchange for lower transaction fees/rates and reasonable minimum volume rates. I'm providing a service to non-profits organization, so having more predictable costs is good. The service is registration for events, which typically is excluded from the "budget" IMA/CC services as its a non-physical product and its not an electronic software download.

Last year when I looked into this I was seeing typical costs of $0.20-$0.35 +2.5-3.5% per transaction and a sufficient monthly volume to equal $30 in service fees, typically with $100 setup fee and $100-$300 yearly fees.

This year I'm seeing a much wider rage of percentages, 1.6-3.5%, but most toward the lower end don't look as reputable and often don't give enough details to understand their restrictions or minimums. Before I go calling/emailing for more details, I was wondering what experiences people here have had.

Thanks

Well, right now we are a bit higher than what you are looking for, but are currently working on a better main stream rate. So I will give you a shout when we get some better per transaction fees.

Whee!
