The children are our future?????

Post by JayBird »

Those of us who were kids in the 50's, 60's, 70's and early 80's probably shouldn't have survived...

Our baby cots were covered with brightly coloured lead-based paint Which was promptly chewed and licked.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, or latches on doors or cabinets and it was fine to play with pans.

When we rode our bikes, we wore no helmets, just flip flops and fluorescent 'clackers' on our wheels.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags - riding in the passenger seat was a treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle and it tasted the same.

We ate dripping sandwiches, bread and butter pudding and drank fizzy pop with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing.

We shared one drink with four friends, from one bottle or can and no-one actually died from this.

We would spend hours building go-carts out of scraps and then went top speed down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into stinging nettles a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back before it got dark. No one was able to reach us all day and no one minded.

We did not have Playstations or X-Boxes, no 99 channels on TV, no dvd movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet chat rooms. We had friends - we went outside and found them.

We played ball tig and street rounders, and sometimes that ball really hurt.

We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones and teeth, and there were no lawsuits. They were accidents. We learnt not to do the same thing again.

We had fights, punched each other hard and got black and blue we learned to get over it.

We walked to friend's homes.

We also, believe it or not, WALKED to school, we didn't rely on mummy or daddy to drive us to school, which was just round the corner.

We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate live stuff, and although we were told it would happen, we did not have our eyes poked out, nor did the live stuff live inside us forever.

We rode bikes in packs of 7 and wore our coats by only the hood.

Our actions were our own. Consequences were expected.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law. Imagine that!

Our generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.

If you're one of them. Congratulations! Enjoy what we have created while it lasts. The world will change soon, as the new generation comes through - Those who have no care for others, take no responsibility for their actions, feel they shouldn't have to work for their living, and instead expect others to support them. Sorry if I sound pessimistic, but I fear the future now...

bech, that's exactly what i have been saying on USCL ( us chess live ) and people thought i was just be niave. good to hear someone else speaking in the same mind-state as me.

i honestly believe it's because of how our nation is bending over and regulating such things as discipline that parents/teachers are allowed to give children, how the government allows people to sue others for ANYTHING and make hundereds of thousands' of dollars for a coffee burn, and also when they took God out of our nation.

All these things combined together, along with other things that i will not mention, and you have a country that is becoming ruled by regulations instead of the freedom we fought for.

I as well, dread to see what the future holds for us and our children, as it's about to be a totally different place all together...

I don't have kids yet, but i am sad that when i do they wont have the freedom i did when i was running around during the 80's. Venturing off away from my house until it got dark, adventuring and finding stuff out for myself.

Really sad...

I agree with most everything you say, except
Those who have no care for others, take no responsibility for their actions, feel they shouldn't have to work for their living, and instead expect others to support them.
I'm 16 years old, meaning i was raised in the 90s. I have restrictions, I couldn't do all the things you're talking about. My parents wanted to know where I was at all times, and still do. I respect them for that.
Not to sound egotistical but I believe I've turned out good so far, I have common sense, a good sense of morals, and i'd like to say i'm also intuitive.

Having all that said, I find your statement to be stereotyping, one of my biggest pet peeves. Just because I was raised in the 90s you expect me to be a whiny, irresponsible, little baby? You may want to rethink your reasoning..

Bech, reading Calvin & Hobbes (comic by Bill Waterson) often makes me think similarly.

Yeah, some may call that steriotypical, but damn is it ever true and good for a laugh for people who remember experiencing such things as wearing a jacket by only the hood...lol

Isn't it also interesting how the same generation that talks about how nice kids have it now, are the ones responsible for how nice kids have it now?

i don't think he was implying that lilpunkskater. though you did miss out on a lot of the finer things in life. :P especially in the early 80s. the music sucked, the clothing sucked, but the lifestyle overall was 20x's better than it is now.

but when he said :
Those who have no care for others, take no responsibility for their actions, feel they shouldn't have to work for their living, and instead expect others to support them.
he wasn't talking about the kids, but instead about the slackers of the world who just sit at the house, and refuse to work or try to do anything, and instead want their mom, dad, wife, etc to give them everything.

It's called CHANGE gentlement. It's called EVOLUTION. It's called PROGRESSION.

BECH100,
You sound like a grumpy "oh the good 'ol days" ninety-something with nothing better to do than moan all day.

We didn't have the Playstation because... it hadn't been invented yet you muppet!
Our generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.
Yeah so what? Kids today who are 3 or 4 will be saying exactly the same thing when they are older.

Well, you get a gold star for coming out with the biggest load of utter tripe I've had the misfortune of reading this year. Well done.

Shows your intelligence that you have to come out with crap like your last message. Can't hold together a stringent conversation and have to resort to insults because you have noting better to say.

So which one of these am I have supposed to have done then? If you're referering to the 'muppet' thing then how do you regard that as being (take your pick from the above list) when a Muppet is a furry (sometimes funny) American puppet? It's just the same as someone calling someone else a plonker or wally... no offence intended.

As far as an intelligent reply to your post is concerned I am at a loss really. What sort of replies do you expect to get after posting such a stereo-typical-heard-it-all-before topic? I prefer to save my 'intelligent' replies for 'intelligent' topics but had to reply to yours simply because after reading it I was left feeling as numb as a penguins arse. My brain near enough shut down from a complete lack of anything 'intelligent' in your post... try sitting down and watching half an hour of Pop Idol and you'll get the same feeling I did after reading your topic.

But hey, everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

My personal view is that what is or is not abusive is what the guy on the receiving end thinks is or is not abusive. Please do not carry on in the same vein if it is obvious you are causing offence.
