sigh... found this in the news today...

Computer tags `master,' `slave' called offensive

http://www.net4nowt.com/isp_news/news_a ... ws_ID=1619

Excerpt

In a memo sent to LA County vendors last week, Joe Sandoval said: "Based on the cultural diversity and sensitivity of Los Angeles County, this is not an acceptable identification label."

"We would request that each manufacturer, supplier and contractor review, identify and remove/change any identification or labelling of equipment components that could be interpreted as discriminatory or offensive."

jeez people... when is all this kinda crap gonna stop?

Interesting article.

It's understandable why people would want it changed. But then again it is being overly-sensetive about the issue.

why would it be understandable to want to have it changed? No offense, but we are talking about computer parts, not human beings... Just as a computer is your slave and you are it's master.

if it was "american master, canadian slave", then ya i would agree... but we're talking about machine terminology...

so, yeah, it's definately being overly-sensetive imo. and also very irrational..

When people use the terms "master" and "slave" togther in a sentence (in a non-tech atmosphere) it's usually always referring to the american slave era.

So it's understandable in a sence that someone who is new to technology would get thoughts about a period in american history in which they do not want reminding about, thus this constant reminder offends them.

That's what I figured from this anyway.

i would totally agree with you on that, if it wasn't for this one part :
"I do understand that this term has been an industry standard for years and years and this is nothing more than a plea to vendors to see what they can do," he said.
that, in it's own, is just a cry for attention...

No, it makes no sense at all. It's stupid.

It's one stupid person making a big deal out of nothing. It's moron's like this that let me see why the rest of the world makes fun of the US. As an American, I find it insulting that things like this happen.

Sure, slavery was bad. But damnit! Haven't these people read 1984? Don't these morons know what they are doing.

It really <span style='color:blue' title='I'm naughty, are you naughty?'>smurf</span> me off to know end to know that my country gives morons the power to be so stupid.

"The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter." - Winston Churchill

what's gonna be worse, is when lawsuits start to spring against the manufacture's who distribute hardrives/cdrom/floppy drives that have "master/slave" on them.

You know, i wonder if people that start this kind of stuff realize that we are living in the year 2003, almost 2004....

That kind of stuff always boils down to: would you refrain from using a nail-clipper if Adolf Hitler used one?

If you do, sit somewhere in a warm, comfy chair and load up your political correction stun gun. Then turn it on yourself. ;)

This is a feeble attempt to relish in his 15 minutes of fame.

Jesus Crimony, it's not like The master and slave are connected by a shackle and/or the slave is controlled by something called a whip. Last I checked my secondary drive was not trying to seek asylum by traveling the underground railroad to the land of harddrive freedom. Maybe there will be a hardware war to free the secondary drives pitting power supply against cpu in an all out grudge match for freedom!

It's things like this that make sure the United States stays at the bottom of the intellectual ladder. Embarrasses the hell out of me that I have to share the title of American with people like this.

Absolutely anything said in this country can be taken as offensive.

Some people do their best to take any statement as offensive to somebody, and oftentimes they are not even a member of the group to whom they believe the statement causes offense.

Someone contacted a radio station I regularily listen to to complain that when one of the presenters made the statement 'a waitress is a female waiter' it was sexist. Surely that's like claiming that saying 'a boy is a male child' is sexist, some people really don't think before they react.

The article says the source is the Straights Times. That's the Singapore newspaper. May be they are still sore about the Japanese invasion of Singapore. Still, its pretty stupid and dumb. I mean honestly, who really gives a sh@#%.

I guess they would be more politically incorrect, and change the CableSelect combo to ChainSelect ..
