I need a php forum on a linux box

Post by nightcap »

I am running redhat 7 and have been told that PHP comes standard with that distro. I don't know if this is true or not. I will cut to the chase.

I need a forum that uses php. And I don't want to spend much money. Is this possible? Also is there a place to go in this forum to learn how to set up with a step by step discription?

I want to set one up on my box, and hopfully be able to present this to my company as a solution for communicating ideas via the web.

I dont ask for much eh?

I'm not sure about RedHat 7 but my RedHat 9 came with httpd (Apache), php, mysql and perl. You can install them under the web server package.

And the forum, check out http://phpbb.com or http://invisionboard.com/

Yea Apache/PHP/MySQL was built for Linux. Doesn't matter what distro you run, it will run well on anything.

And phpBB2 is what this forum uses and phpBB2 is tha shiznat!!

Well, phpbb is a good forum but It doesn't have the 'nice-to-have' features. If you're new you'd probably go for phpbb. Then consider IPB later on.

imho, IPB's way easier to skin.

I've made quite a few skins for phpBB, not hard for me. And phpBB is FREE!

Why did the PHPDN go with phpBB over IPB?

IPB wasn't out.

Why is the PHPDN is still using phpBB?

Because we have a bunch of hacks for phpBB already in place, it would take a lot more time than I would like to spend convernting to yet another BBS, and the net result would be the same: We have a discussion board.

What features are missing from the phpBB boards the the PHPDN need?

Nothing really. We are all having discussions, aren't we? Something must be working.
