Firebird

Post by Gen-ik »

Just downloaded and got the Firebird browser up 'n running and from having a quick bash on it (using it at the moment) it seems quite good.

It's like a hybrid of Internet Explorer and Netscape from what I can make out, the View Source / JavaScript console / Tabs etc are very NS, and the menus ect are very IE.

I'll give it more of a test run before I give it the thumbs-up but it's looking pretty good at the moment.

Oh by the way... what is the Firebird / Netscape relationship... the AppName of Firebird comes up as netscape 8O

Netscape is the commercialised AOL version of Mozilla and Firebird is a fork in the Mozilla development tree - meaning, Firebird is a cut down version of Mozilla, browser only. Make sure you download the Webdeveloper plugin - it's fantastically useful.

Give me a shout when you've found out how. I couldn't be bothered.
You've probably already noticed that the Flash plugin installer by itself only detects Mozilla...;)

When you use the installer, select the 'Other Location' button... then browse to the Firebird plugin folder, and on your way you go

After that, you should have flash installed

Be sure to look over the extensions, some can be really useful.

As patrikG said, make sure to check out the Web Developer Toolbar, very helpful. When designing, one of my favorite things is the ability to resize the window using the toolbar. I can check out how the site will look at lower or higher resolutions. 8)

Ok. So as a browser to develop and test websites with is Firebird up to the job or are there some nasty little bugs hanging around?

I've noticed that on a couple of websites (including this one) that some of the text on form buttons gets cut-off (using firebird).

Afaik, After Netscape4, about half of the Netscape team left and made Mozilla, a free open source semi-version of Netscape, although much more standardized. Basically they are two different browsers made by some of the same people. And of course Firebird is a browser that uses the Mozilla engine.
