Pretty useless question, but I can't find the answer, means to test or know anyone that has tested this.

A couple of friends of mine working as hardware gurus at a company just placed a huge order on firewire (external) harddrives for the company.

:!: Say I place 27+ of those harddrives onto my computer config.
:?: C, D ... Y, Z... but what would happen to the letters after it surpasses the Z?

I would be amazed if it even worked, but I'm no hardware guru so I wont go there... =)

In Unix and in Windows 2000 and XP you can assign drives a path. So there is no limit, there is no need for drive letters, except for system and boot drives in Windows. I think the only limit would be the interface you were using to connect the drives, IDE, SCSI, USB, FireWire, etc....

It shouldn't be a problem if the HDD's have their own external power source. But, I would think having that many things plugged into one's firewire ports would lag up the system pretty badly..but, thats just me.

(...and /path/ comment above)

Sure, crossed my mind also, but it's just in theory.
My main thought was if windows itself actually could handle it (or see the drives surpassing Z: or if it would break into a burst of flames, throw itself out of the window and be last seen heading out into the wilderness imitating a three legged lhama...

I just purchased a couple of hdd's myself and will test this myself using virtual drives daemons upon installing them (hence the fear of the lhama issue above). For those intrigued about what happens or just simply 'need to know' as myself, I'll let you know.

I have seen 128 peripherals connected to a usb port!

Cant find any picture now, but our lecturer showed us it at uni a few years ago
