Not wanting to appear rude, but the question was about semantics and the words were "programming language". A programming language is to create programs. A computer language can be anything...
English is also a computer language.

semantics, ah!, semantics

Sure it is a semantic problem in the question, but A programming language may be NOT ONLY for creating programs (IMO)

I thing be can (all) agree that HTML is a "MARKUP" language.

Markup, page setup, text and content parsing, not more else (altough Berners-Lee would like it to be more powerfull... )

I think it's not necessary to be compiled for being a program
That is what I hate about the quote system. It looks like i said it, but it was actually a quote from the post above mine.

There is nothing programming about HTML. Nothing at all. It is simply writing text just like I am doing to post this thread. There is no actual functions that HTML poses other than the standard (and very important) markup lanquage to allow sites or bb systems such as this, to impose such biased and one sided opinions on others. :P

WHO

Post by jeanloui »

Dr Evil wrote:Who are all these "Yes" voters ?
It does not matter WHO the yes voters are (IMO)
Only the OPINIONS and ARGUMENTS count.

And HOW the opinions are posted.

I say "seemed", not "you are".

Good point ! The idea, Inspecteur Clouseau, was to get these 'Yes' voters to come out and express their opinions.
Sorry if this was misinterpreted.

Let's supose it's NOT

Post by jeanloui »

Let's supose it's NOT anyway any kind of programming language.

Vote -> Democracy wins -> Discussion closed.

What we lose then?

- If the people who is coding (let's say C++ or Java or LISP) doesn't know what IS a programming language (not even a mere "progam"), all the work they do is made into "subculture" (TV, media, etc : "programs are compiled", "programs have source code")

There has been people here arguing very well.

In some posts, we have been at the limit of the definition.

But I think this is not the place for going deeper into this, and less if very few of the posts define (or point at some external definition) of the question.

my php 4.3.4 (and the 5!) are waiting for me, so thanks!

My conclussion:

programming is a so strange dedication that is incompatible with:

Code: Select all

1 - Design (graphics, art, aesthetics)
2 - Sales (marketing, clients, products, reunions)
3 - Classical Philosophy (usually, literature)
4 - History (I don't care of the past)
5 - Daily life (coders can not follow family schedules)
6 - Architecture (architects doesn't like computers)
Happily, it IS absolutely compatible with a lot of other MORE INTERESTING activities

lol ive just read back this whole topic........

...........it seems funny to me that a poll is created and then you try and sniff out the people who went across the grain and voted yes

why even bother creating a poll if all you are gonna do is slate people who dont agree with you, thats lame and isnt what i have come to expect from the PHP community, that is more suited in the ASP forums

personally i voted yes, and im 2 tired to post the reasons why again, i dont care if it technially isnt a programming language, it is 2 me, because without it nothing is happening, when im creating my DIVS / Tables, i dont think, oh yeah, im writing in word here, HTML has a fairly strict syntax to comply with, or it wont display properly, just as any other language

anyway who cares if HTML is'nt 'technically' a programming language, without it other web-based programming languages including PHP wouldnt exist!
someone trying to be clever wrote: ah yeah, but now we have XML!
yeah, great, fantastic, XML is a newer version of HTML which without HTML wouldnt exist and the internet wouldnt be like it is today

and besides if the net was made up of something like C++ do you think there'd be anywhere near as many people participating in our community
short answer = NO, nowhere near as many

and answer the ones that have relevant interest for me...

NEX POLL: IT'S A FORUM THE BEST DISCUSSION PLACE?

- No, there are too "quote" confusion there
- Not at all, I must first know the person who I'm talking with
- No, people only reinforces theyr thoughts, and don't care about other opinions
- No, people sniff, read and reply other posts without giving his real opinion
-------------------------------------------------
- Yes, I always look for people to fight with
- Yes, when I don't like an opinion, I leave the forum and I maintain mine
- Yes, a lot of people can know there WHO I AM !
- Yes, I like the moderatos icons (jason, etc)

Code: Select all

IF it is not the better place, please suggest one
NEXT POLL:

Do you like computers?

NEXT POLL:

Do you like yourself?

Just because there is a vote, does not mean that it is a democracy. The U.S. votes, and they are a republic.

I would hate the feel the wrath of the 1 ply'ers.

Guys/Gals : Lighten up..this is a discussion forum, we are not exactly debating the effects of Hydrogen power on the world economy here :D

NASA engineers drive slow to theyr homes. (50 M/h)
They find out (or calculate) how far a human body can go.
The astronaut go fast, but he can not (is not his job) find out how far one can go.

Eliot was wrong at this point (IMO)

Answering:

ply'ers means a game with 1 or 2 PLAYERS ? (excuse me for my english)
