Great Mystery

Post by chvol »

I have a simple, serious question. It is a great mystery that seems to not have an answer: Why do web sites not tell you how to access the functionality provided?

The title of the page is "PHP Forums". Ok, good. I want to post a question and get an answer. So how do I do that? It doesn't tell you. The FAQ just says what to do when you're already there. I poked around (almost gave up altogether) and found that if you click on SEARCH there is a link PHP Forums Forum Index, that doesn't even look like a link. I just happened to see that it was.

If you're going to provide all of this nice software and somputing time and space, why not have a link on the 1st page that says "Click here to go to forums"?

Why?

The term "Board Navigation" is too obscure for you?
It didn't occur to you to click on the underlined (obviously a link) word "Forum" in that box.

Most websites assume some intelligence on the part of the user.

I think you've got a point. Regular visitors have their own internal map of what's what but newcomers don't. Since the forum is the meat and veg of phpdn, it possibly should have a "weight" in the layout (position. size, colour etc) which reflects that.

It's not that the link can't be found, but it makes you work for a it a little bit.

Also, there's people that want others to do everything for them, lazy people... :D that's the kind of people that don't do the classwork and expect the guy next to them to give them the work at the end of class...

A designer's job is to accomodate lazy people and idiots above everyone else.

I propose a blind person Link system

Code: Select all

<font size="30" color="red" face="arial bold"><a href="http://forums.devnetwork.net/index.php"><img src="/images/bullseye.gif" alt="This is the link to the forums, so please remember that this link is for the forums and not your favorite pornsite. Clicking on this link will take you to the forums. We assume no responsibility if this link does not take you to the forums or take no responsibility if the Mars rover suddenly takes a snapshot of any significant data that can support life on mars. You have the rite to click on any link found in this menu bar, but this one takes you to the forums. If you feel that this link may be contaminated, please use our support link found near the other link that says support. Please keep in mind we assume that your intelligence will dictate a safe and happy browsing experience, however please refrain from questions or comments when all doesnt go your way.>&nbsp;&nbsp;<b>FORUMS</b></a>

I think Redhair is on to something there. A possible button set may be in the works.
