Shortly before I was laid off from my university web developer/web server manager job, we upgraded to Apache 2.x (too long to recall exact version) and had no problems.
This was on an HP-UX box (I had no real voice when it came to system platform decisions, the director had a thing for expensive unix boxes...), with SSL, mod_auth_ldap, PHP 4.x (Im thinking it was a later 4.2.x release), and a whole host of PHP extensions. Also used virtual domains and a few other mods, mostly security related (director was also a security freak...now security is good, but doubling up firewalls of the same type is just.....pointless)
Ive used both, and if building a new server I would probably go with Apache 2, but your mileage may vary. I just say use what fits your needs best, and what your more comfortable with.
