None of the games of the day will ever compare to the fun i had with games on my commodore 64 and Amiga. Side-scrolling or top-down shoot-em-ups were my favourite. Especially the ones with outrageuos multi-direction weapons.

SWIV was one of my favourites. Was a top down helicopter shoot-em-up. Could have 2 players where one had the helicopte and the other was in a jeep. Awesome.

Also, Lotus Esprit...quality two-player racing game.

great game, hard as nails if i remember rightly

i personally dont think games were better then, i think they were harder (no saves in 99% of games) and when you spend 3 months completing a game its bound to stick in your memory

Online: Quake 3 Arena. (Runner up is Promisance, a text-based php game I helped develop, and was the main reason I learned PHP.)

Offline: Super Mario Bros. I for NES. (Runner up is a tie between Quake 1 and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City...GATTA LOVE THIS GAME!)

Pirates on the Amiga. Wasn't that great, but it was brilliant with U2's "Joshua Tree" running in the background.

Starcontrol 2.

No other game approaches its writing, its style, its interface, and its general fun-level.

I literally took 4 days off of work to play it back when I was working paycheck-to-paycheck. It was *that* good.

No game has come close since.
