If the moderators established a points system that they shared between themselves, without announcing it on the forum, I think it might -- MIGHT -- be useful. Of course, that could be abused as well.JAM wrote:Noted the recent discussions about moderators being/acting "Godlike" on these forum?xisle wrote:I would agree that the Moderator may add a point to the poster's overall rating, in a case when a problem is resolved. Other than that, this may cause unnecessary competition. I view this forum as a learning/teaching environment.
Even tho I think it's very much narrowed down to very few individuals sharing these thoughts, a thought on the subject must be made...
Say the mod's would be the ones rating users. Would everyone be comfortable with this? In the future? Would I need to go through my PM inbox each day to deal with various of rating related issues?
Yes, likely us mod's will take the heat and better me than you as it comes with the teritory. But as everyone seems to get involved with these discussions it might polute more than being a good thing.
But let's face it, all the regular posters and moderators already have established an informal rating system for those they consider credible or productive, and those they don't. I doubt that formalizing it and publicizing it will be helpful to the rest of us. As I get more familiar with this forum, I expect I'll develop one for myself as well. But it probably won't be the same as yours, because it will be more relevant to my unique needs and preferences.
I think that's really the best approach. Let those who have experienced a certain amount of give and take form their own opinions. For those who haven't been here long enough, or who don't browse regularly enough to form such opinions, a rating system still would fall short, because it wouldn't necessarily be scored with respect to THEIR needs, which nobody but them can understand anyway.

I think Bill H is right on most of his points. Although, take AOL Instant Messenger's "Warning" system, which probably seemed like a good idea to them at the time, but never worked out, nor did it hold anybody back from saying whatever they want over IM.
On the other hand, I would vote for the idea, cause then it would caution some of us (like myself at time) to not be so quick to speak without thinking first. And also, for those who blabber off answers that are not accurately true, which just confuses the people asking the questions.
Either way, a rating system that is more like a Top 10 Forum Users or Mods at any given time kind of thing sounds good. Like a top 10 list that isn't per month, but rather non-stop kind of like computer game clans on the internet's OGL list.

Haha, sure, but there alot of us that likes a good discussion, evn if not participating in them directly.phice wrote:I think this is the only community that I've been to that can get into a deep conversation about the functionality of a user rating system. ;)
As llanitedave said: Most of us have allready established a informal (may it even be personal) rating system of our own. I sure have, and not by looking at who is answering what posts, but rather other things they've posted...

Hmm...i dont fully agree. I was apart of the FXHome community and they are currently running a very successful rating system. It had its probs to start with, similar to what you mentioned bill, but now its a solid part of the forum and adds alot of character. Well, thats what i think. :pI think the quality of this forum would be seriously diminished by a rating system, and will be hugely disappointed to see one implemented.
