personally you cant go wrong with:

the herbaliser
RJD2
amon tobin
kid koala
bonobo
quantic

anything chilled and slighly depressing.

however, working in a studio full of designers, my ears get offended easily

Unexpect, Luca Turilli, Sonata Arctica, are some of my favorites.

I prefer heavy metal, or anything containing a melody.*

* Not rap, country, and copy-paste techno

smoky barnacle... you like syd barret's solo work? I am just starting to get into it... I didn't even realize he had a solo career (a very short one) until a few months ago... Meddle is and always will be my favorite Floyd album... there's nothing like Fearless... that song is amazing.

I don't even like pink floyd that much after syd. I always thought syd was the genius behind it all. Pipers at the gates of dawn is a good album. Syd's solo stuff is hard to find and he was "losing his mind" during most of the recording of it. However, I find most of it profound and quite interesting. I recommend "octopus" and "golden hair".

Woo threadcromancy. :)

I thought I'd bump this to pimp The Decemberists. They're an amazing band. I've been coding to them for the past couple of days. Check them out.

Oooh oooh me too! See the new avatar? That's Pinback. They're fantastic. Check out their new album that came out on the 11th. It's called Autumn of the Serephs. It's AMAZING. Better than anything they've done previously. :-D Also Blackfield and Porcupine tree... like always!

Lately it has been a steady rotation of Pearl Jam Pandora Radio, Nirvana Pandora Radio, Mother Love Bone Pandora Radio and Gospel Worship. Seems like a little bit of an odd mix, but it has worked. Right now I am acutally listening to Lenny Kravits on my Alice In Chains Pandora Radio station.

Too bad I can't concentrate with music on :(

Only at the end of the day when it's time for some dumb surfing/skimming feeds is it time for a bit of Air, Royksopp, William Orbit or something else relaxing. Or Laurent Garnier when in a more energetic state.

Sometimes I just need the speed rush I get hearing Stone Gossard slash out a phat riff or Lane Staley tearing it up the way only he can. What can I say?

Silence usually.

But when I need something to listen to: Michael Buble, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sophie Milman, Renae Olstead, Jane Moineit, Sarah McLachlan, Imogen Heap, Aaron Neville, Harry Connick Jr., Huey Lewis, Dido, Norah Jones, Enya, Lionel Richie, Ryan Shupe & The Rubberband, Sarah Brightman, They Might Be Giants, Yo-Yo Ma, John Denver, Kingston Trio, Orchestral stuff like James Horner(braveheart), Alan Silvestri(BTTF,ForrestGump), John Barry(Dances,Bond), John Williams.

And when I really need a pick-me-up group of songs, Collective Soul or Journey.

...and when I really feel like annoying the heck out of my co-workers, Britney Spears, The Corrs, Spice Girls, etc....

I've recently become addicted to Kanye West's remix of Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" song. It usually gets me breakdancing instead of coding, but that doesn't really bother me. :P

^Stronger isn't really a remix, it's better described as a new song with heavy sampling. A remix usually implies that the lyrics and everything are still there. Good song though (Kanye's version, that is).. I like Chamillionaire's version best of all though, he calls it Makes Me Stronger, available for free download as part of Mixtape Messiah 3 off his website.

On topic - Sometimes no music to improve concentration, but other times here are albums I've been listening to lately:
- Chamillionaire - Ultimate Victory
- Kanye West - Graduation
- 50 Cent - Curtis (most of the album sucks IMO due to bad production, but three or so are good)
- Young Buck - Buck the World
- T.I. - TI vs TIP
- Young Jeezy - Let's Get It - Thug Motivation 101 (two years old but some of Jeezy's best songs are on here)
