Oh, yeah! The Violent Femmes...I love that old school stuff. I also like:

The Smiths, esp. Louder Than Bombs
Echo and the Bunnymen
The Cure (older stuff, like Staring at the Sea)
Elvis Costello
Talking Heads
Descendants
Front 242
Jesus and Mary Chain

I could go on and on... 8)

My, my... I didn't expect to hear some of those names. Being an old tosser myself and having gotten into the whole punk scene thing back in 1979 (Yes, I know. That was before some of you were old enough to talk), many of the above mentioned bands were the thing of the day.

On that last, I loved Echo, The Cure (how about "Killing an Arab")...., well, all of them actually except for The Smiths.

I've spent tons of time with Front 242!

OK, now too that list, I add...
The Psychedelic Furs esp Talk Talk Talk( I know I spelled that wrong)
Ultravox
KIlling Joke (An intelligent and insidious band! Fall of mankind stuff.)
Souixe and the Banshees ( I absolutely love Arabian Knights!)

Speaking of which, I jumped on the stage once when they played at Santa Monica Civic (sometime in the mid '80's) and gave her a peck on the cheek before dodging the last of the bouncers that were heading in like missles and diving back into the audience.

Death Cult (Their name before they became The Cult. They were originally called Southern Death Cult, but changed to the cult after a break up then inclusion of old members from another batcave band called Theater of Hate.)

The Clash (Some of the things they sang about in high school, i'm seeing the wreckage of now being down here in South America Also, they were the first to dub versions of their tracks. Robber Dub, Armigideon Time, ...)

Dead Kennedys (Jello was another man with a lot to say)

Lastly, and this may sound strange, but that early Devo stuff was genius! Not that "Whip It" crap that they did just to appease an industry suit, but the early things like Jocko Homo. They came straight outa' deep right with the pedal down spouting all kinds of weird stuff about nuclear fallout and accidents, bubbled eyed dog boys, and the de-evoluton of man kind. Whacked? Yes! But entertaining like it was going out of style.

Now it's funny to me that nobody has mentioned much Ska or dance hall. How about The Selector or Desmond Decker?

Cheers,

depends on when I write down my list. At other times it might have been filled with Prince Buster, Lee Scratch Perry and Dr.Ringding as well ;)
atm Seeed satisfies this part of me :D

To your additions to the list: Image I had no doubt the eighties are striking back :D
Yesterday in search of a certain radio station I encountered dancing with tears in my eyes, live is life and in the army now in very short order, hockey hair is en vogue (arghh) and even the punks get in sight more often again. I expect complete sets of leonardo glasses and selfmade Pierot-sculptures to be back again within the next year, too (maybe that was only a german disease) Image
and hey, Madonna is still in business, isn't she? Image

btw: has anybody seen the movie velvet goldmine?

Velvete goldmine...that sounds familiar. Why do I think I've seen that...

Speaking of movies and the punk theme...has anyone seen Suburbia? I know there are a couple of movies out there with that name, but the one I'm referring to has Flea in it and is about a bunch of punks back in the 80's who live in "suburbia." The acting is horrible but it's a cult classic.
Dead Kennedys (Jello was another man with a lot to say)
I have a Ministry video..."Live: In case you didn't feel like showing up.", where Jello gets on stage right before their last song of the set, "The Land of Rape and Honey," and does his infamous pledge of allegiance to the united snakes of captivity. Then, he struts around on stage during the song waving an upside-down flag and alternating between sucking his thumb and giving the nazi heil salute. It's hilarious...you can see all of the skins in the crowd just getting <span style='color:blue' title='I'm naughty, are you naughty?'>smurf</span>, but there's a big chain-link fence between the crowd and the band so they can't get to him.

Anyway, enough of my trip down memory lane. It's nice to see so many like-minded people here in the old posting-boards! 8)

Depends - sometimes BBC Radio 4, Radio Helsinki (they've got REALLY great music-features and very good 32kbit-stream), Jazz and my Winamp playlist (anything from Deep Dive Corp, Slowhill, Madredeus, Pink, Ramstein, New Model Army, Enya, Classical, VNV Nation, DJ Sasha, Bob Dylan).

Sometimes I just enjoy coding in silence... :)

for non complex stuff that I need done fast I listen to goa psychedelic trance - http://www.philosomatika.com/ - .pls streamed at 160Kb (very reccommended for anyone who likes a fast beat)

more technical stuff that needs a bit of thought and can be done slower normally has me switching to EuroDance from DI http://www.digitallyimported.com/
