weekend break in

This monday morning we discovered someone had broke into our office. It was done using a screwdriver, it seems. A window frame was broke open and they made a hole next to the lock in an internal door in order to unlock it.

They went in, and probably just scanned it, because we can't see anything missing. They didn't make a mess either.

We do have some desireable computers and stuff. Nothing was taken...

Either this is all over and we just had a strange visitor, or we can look forward to having it all stolen next weekend or so.

We have a terrific backup solution today, I think, with one server taking backups from numerous machines. But it is our intent to have a backup of the backup server too, in another village, in case of thefth or fire. We don't so far, so I guess we'll have to work on the boring subjects for a while...

Yes.
Since we are using Gentoo linux on all servers, with all the compiling that takes place before utilisation, recovery time after a disaster is quite long.

Since I want two backup computers, one master and one slave. What do you think of this Idea:

I take a snapshot of the complete system, using a liveCD with no fancy stuff mounted. Then I set up the backup computer to use a floppy for configuration with all IP-addresses and stuff and mount it at boot with lots of symlinks to it and so.

Then the only thing that differs between the master and the slave is the content of that floppy. Making replacement a piece of cake.

I can make such snapshots CDs of every involved computer, keeping the special information (not necessarily secret info) on removable devices. Thus, making the recovery time very short in case of a loss.

I'm good.

 He should have broken into the bedroom instead then. (The door next to the office door) That door wasn't even locked.
