Runnng a Network through hub and second comp. internet off

Post by zombie000 »

Hello all. I am just trying to fix a problem that I have. See I have a network through a hub, which actually isnt a real network. What I mean is that my comp got the internet connection and it goes through the hub where the second comp gets its connection as well.

When i first hooked up the second comp on the hub, it was wrokin fine. It had no problems with the net. We could visit websites, d/l stuff, play internet games, everything. But after the second comp been unpluged and unused for a week, now the net for it doesnt work.

We tried some stuff, like looking up subnet masks ip addresses , even reinstalling the Windows XP maybe it would fix the problem. But nothing is working anyone got any suggestions. Any help is very welcome.

is this through DSL or Cable or some other broadband service? If so, you generally require a router to make the actual internet connection and parse the connection out to those on the network its connected to.

If this is through dial-up, Windows XP has ip sharing built-in, that I remember. I've never used it, but it shouldn't be too difficult to set up.

It is cable internet. But like I said, when I connected the second comp on the hub where I had the cable modem connected and my first comp connected, the second comp was gettin in the internet without any problems. I havent changed any wires since then. The only thing changed is the second comp being plunged in again after a week of being unplunged

your provider may have restricted the number of IP's your connection may get, so they may be denying the computer connection. I'd suggest contacting them about it.

Can that really happen now?? I mean I got the second comp hooked on my internet for about a year now, and they catch on right now and restrict that thing???

it's quite possible they didn't care until recently, or just started enforcing their rules..
