Surf's Up (North Atlantic Tidal Wave)

Post by McGruff »

The bit that really gets me is the estimated speed: 560mph. That's more like a shotgun blast than a wave. Anything that gets in its way (like the US east coast) is toast.

But cheer up - it might never happen. The Yosemite supervolcano might beat La Palma to it. I forget the numbers exactly, but it goes off something like every 600,000 years (as regular as old faithful) and it's 620,000 years since the last one. The La Palma collapse is just a little local difficulty in comparison. The eruption might extinguish most life on earth.

Have a nice day now!

Yeah I heard about this over at cnn.com, this is sure freaky.

But lucky me, I'm pretty far from the East coast, and I have the Rockies just west of me to protect me from the Pacific. 8)

Hmm, let's see. I have PEI, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunskwick, Quebec, and half of Ontario to protect me. I think I'll be fine for the tidal wave, seeing as I'm further up north than the U.S...so, I think I'll be fine. LilpunkSkater, packed your bags yet? :P

If you take a look at http://www.maps.com/reference/phypol/atlas/phy/USA.html all the green bits are land up to 500ft.

The tsunami is estimated to be 60-150ft high BUT it'll be travelling at over 500mph and from front to back will be over 100 miles deep.

When it hits land it won't stop. The pressure and momentum of billions of tons of seawater behind the wave front will force it onwards and upwards all the way to the Appalachian foothills. The entire Florida peninsula will be scoured clean - not a stick left standing. It's so powerful that it will permanently alter the geography of the east US (and other parts of the globe) ripping the tops off of hills, tearing chunks out of the coastline, and so on. Cities like Washington DC won't just be destroyed, there will hardly be anything left to show that they were ever there.

Calling it a biblical-scale disaster would be a gross understatement.
