Google tends to rank pages according to how many other pages links to it, so you really need to have good content that people will want to link to. There are also considerations about your url, such as it doesnt seem to like linking to dynamic pages where variables are placed in the url - so mod rewrite maybe a useful tool for you here.
Then also think of not how google searchs, but how people do. When your link is indexed in google and comes up say 40th what is going to make somebody who looks down the list click on your site? The one obvious answer is to ensure that the title of the page isnt just a standard name - but relates to the content of the page.
Im sure there are more little tricks that you can do depending on what your site offers - if its a site about web development - then post in forums like these with the details in your signature. Little things like that can really get more traffic to your site.

then post in forums like these with the details in your signature
just make sure it's allowed by the operators of the site.
Creating a user strictly for getting their site to link to yours is very uncool as well.. and will probably get you into a lot of trouble with them.. and potentially your ISP, if they contact them, like we do here.

On the flip side of that justified paranoia is the fact that spreading link love can be a great reason TO post and contribute to a forum.
Many users (in the hopes of getting their signature links spread) will post more than a few times in a high-rating forum (for example, slashdot), and once they do, they see the return on investment in being involved there (and perhaps actually learn to enjoy/use the forum on its own merits).
That said, I've fought my fair share of register-to-get-link-love idiots, and its no trivial or rare occurance.. if your PR is > 3, it will happen - often.
So, if you want to get link-love from forums, the best bet is to contribute on those forums - often - and be useful there.

guys, thanks for the info,
my web page is a commercial webpage, it sells online motoring stock i.e tyres etc. so if i put that link as my signature then would that breach the rules of forums that dont have anything to do with motoring??

Depends on the forums rules. But i personally dont mind you placing the link in your signature on here as after all its a web site and this is about web development. Anywhere that you help users and post your thoughts should allow you to post the site as its a part of you and shows an incite into you.

Well there is basic site SEO, and then there is [google]Google AdWords[/google].
If you want a quick fix, try AdWords.
Also, if you want to get on top of the other major searches (Yahoo, Altavista, MSN, etc.) check out [google]Overture[/google].

guys thanks for our replies! as per usual they were quick and useful!
ok, so now i know what to do, how should i do it??
should all the links to my site be exactly the same? i.e
"<a href="mydomain.com">the best domain in town</a>"
if i typed this then what would be the key words that the googlebot would recognise? so if im selling soap for example, how should i write my link??

ok ive read that site, i think im ready to get promoting my site with my signatures! i got a PM from someone who i wont name who suggested this:
first get the top 2 or 3 URLs from the google for the related data of ur site.
then easily using pattern matching ,grep the content from the sites and display it in ur site .then automatically ur site will be in top 10 of google ranking.
i think that not allowed, and would probably result in me getting banned from google listings! am i right?

Well that is usually what porn and warez sites do - which probably works but it makes your site look crap in most peoples eyes - it depends on what kind of visitors you are looking for.

That one page is just a starting point.. google has numerous other pages explaining how to make a site that will get a good rating. For example, on
"Google information for Webmasters", they say:
Make pages for users, not for search engines. Don't deceive your users, or present different content to search engines than you display to users.
Good content that is interesting to users and regularly updated will get visitors. When you get regular visitors, they will link to your site from their site. When that happens repeatedly, your google rating will rise.
Adding content because a competitor has it isnt going to be interesting or useful to users, so it wont get linked to. Further, google may find that you are "gaming the system", and remove you from their index.
The simple answer is: There is no shortcut to getting a good google rating (and certainly not a 100% guarantee). Build good content FOR USERS, regularly update it, provide links to the content on sites you visit, and get the word out about your site.
Thats how to get a good google rating, period. There are over a dozen pages on google on how to build a website that will get a good rating, and they run the system that does it - I suggest relying on their opinion, as ours are simply recycling their statements.
UPDATE:: You should also work on making your site html compliant, remove the "splash screen" or "doorway page", and limit your use of flash - since google cant parse flash. Those will all help.
