I'd vote against the patents, what about the rest of you?

I think that some patents would be usefull for the struggling developer(s) that have a good peice of software, but the patents must be stringent and very limiting to what they cover, not blanket patents.
I don't see how having patents stops people from releasing their software as open source, as linux does now, but yes patents must be curtailed so the EU doesn't end up with a monstrous, over bloated system like the US.
Of course you must take into account that, that site is a fear-mongering site that has been set up for it's own political purpose's, even if it is for the public-good.

Yeah i agree, the main thing i'd like to see avoided is the same thing happening that goes on in the US. If worked wrongly, which you can bet it will be, small companies will suffer. Not to mention the pockets of all of us.

unfortunetly I am in now position to vote or write letters, emails, etc... to my member of the EU because I am not an UK/EU citizen. I did read a great article on the subject a couple of months ago in Linux Format I thing that went over many of the issues and possible consiquences'?' and explained how the american style of patents was both good and flawed.
But the conclusion of the article was to do as I suggested, not form letters/emails but proper letters with your concerns on it. As the site says there is power in the people.

It's the devils own work...
Seriously, as an EU member (Irish) software patents are a nuisance. Next we'll adopt patenting business methods like the US (no offence but the US has a really screwed up patent system). All it'll do is allow big companies patent broadly defined items too easily - there are companies in the US that do nothing BUT sue over the patents they possess...

yeah it's another step to the "more lawyers than anything else in america", nothing against americans but i don't want to see something that gives another excuse for lawyers to crawl from the woodwork. Even the americans here must admin the "i'll sue you" state of life has gone too far there.

This looks like the huge mistake that they claim it will be in the article.
