Problems with Windows Media Player 10

I recently downloaded a few avi videos from a website, tried playing them in Windows Media Player 10 and ran into some problems. What happens is i'll open the file up and hit play and i'll hear the music in the background but I won't see any video. If I try to stop the video or close windows media player the computer freezes so that I can't even do a Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

I've looked around microsofts troubleshooting page for wm10, made sure the program is up2date, and tried re-installing the program but problems persist. I've also determined that it's not the actual video files because when I try to play other files on the web the same problem occurs.

Anyone have any ideas as to what I can do from here?

Doesn't a dialog box asking you to install proper codec pop when you try to play the movie?

When I first tried to play the video I got an error message saying I needed a certain codec. I followed a series of links that lead to a microsoft site telling me that I needed the xvid codec. Downloaded the codec, installed the codec and problem remained.

ohh... then it's apparently problem with codec. Last time I had to mess with video codecs I ended up installing K-Lite codec pack. It solved problems for me, your mileage may vary though.

Try vlc - plays pretty much anything you throw at it.
