X-Box v.s. Playstation 2

Okay, so I am shopping for a game system. I would like to rely less on my Wintendo, switch over to Mandrake, and use my TV for gaming.
Now, X-Box has better performance I hear, and better figures for it's machine (Better graphics, more RAM, etc) plus, Dolby Digital 5.1 sound which I have the equipment for. So technically/hardware wise, it's better, (and I already own a 5 disc DVD player), however, Playstation has apparently more games.
So the question I have to ask is, are all those extra games really worth it?
Personally, if I had to buy one know, I would go with the X-Box, I was just hoping other's might have some insight into either system.
Also, don't bring up the Evil Microsoft empire argument.
Seeing that I want to make the switch to Linux and this is part of the reason I am buying the system, it would be ironic I think.
