Telephone calls hanging up in the UK
I've been getting an increased amount of mysterious phone calls where the caller hangs up after I pick up.
I've heard this is some telemarketing thing, but I just don't understand it. Does anyone know anything about this?

I get three phone calls of this kind each day!
(And nearly each day I win a car or some million bucks...)

Re: Telephone calls hanging up in the UK
Im only guessing here, perhaps it is an outomated system checking if the phone numbers are still in existence.zenabi wrote:I've been getting an increased amount of mysterious phone calls where the caller hangs up after I pick up.

if you answer, the number is marked as active. If not, you are deleted from the database!?

These are the result of telemarketers using automatic dialing machines. A machine has dialed you based on a timing system that assumed a sales person would be available, but when you answer no salesperson was available to service the call after all. Either somebody went to the bathroom when not scheduled to do so, or some calls took longer than scheduled, etc. Anyway, no human available to service the auto-dialed call, so -- click.

1. The automated systems are wired to not permit incoming calls...you can call them back give them a piece of your mind.
2. Can't afford to give any away. I need all that remains of what little I was born with.
Related irritation: the phone rings and you answer, giving your name as you do so. After a second or so there is a click and someone asks for you by name. Same issue -- automatic dialer with no human attached until you do answer.
Those cold calls are really annoying. Came back after a couple of days to find three messages on my answering machine. With all three the message, the wording, the voice even the breathing was the same: I had won the lottery, the friendly man told me. Wooha, what am I doing still at work then?
There must be a cold hell somewhere in the fifth ring of hell especially for these guys. It's only a question of getting them there...

A few days ago i get such a call...
- I: "hallo"
- They: "Do you prefer this talk in German or in French?"
- I: "I want to talk dutch/flemish..."
- They: "No no, you can only choose french or german"
- I: "Bye"
Sometimes i feel sorry for those uneducated lowlives that have to make thos e calls for a living...
